I’m standing at the counter Wiping down the coffee rings She walks in through the doorway Doesn’t seem to notice things She sits down near the window Like she’s been here all her life I ask if she wants coffee She says yes, then stirs it twice I can tell she’s deep in thinking Though she tries to hide her frown I see her glance outside and Then just quietly looks down Her toast is growing colder She’s not touched a single bite And when I ask “is all okay?” She says softly, “Yeah, I’m fine.” A man walks in and nods to her But she pretends he’s not around He stands there hesitating Then walks out without a sound I refill her cup with coffee She says “thanks” and tries to smile I can tell there’s something heavy But I don’t press — not my style The jukebox plays a rhythm I’ve heard a thousand times before But in this quiet moment It somehow settles more She gathers up her things now Leaves the tip, a crumpled note I catch a glimpse — “I’m moving on” Just those words that she wrote The door swings shut behind her And I’m left to clear her plate Another stranger’s story Passed through here by twist of fate
